Nurse's Message - April 2024
Happy Spring!
With the warm weather hopefully coming soon we are excited to get more chances to be outside in the fresh air. This should provide us with increased opportunities to exercise and soak in Vitamin D. Our Community Garden will be planted soon - we are going to start with lettuce which will give us an early show. Keep an eye on that box at the front of the school to see what will be growing next.
For those who suffer from seasonal allergies - trees, plants and grass pollination can cause symptoms that are often confused with viruses. Primary symptoms of allergies can be sneezing, fatigue and itchy eyes. Additional symptoms can be congestion, cough, headache and sore throat. Allergies generally present as symptoms that come and go or persisting mild symptoms that do not show a sign of resolving. The most common treatments can be found over the counter. If your child suffers from seasonal allergies please talk to your pediatrician about effective medications to alleviate symptoms. The school does not have allergy medication available in the nurse’s office.
COVID guidelines have been updated. As with every respiratory virus we ask you to stay home till fever free for 24 hours. Once you are fever free and feeling better you can return to school. Please call my office at 617 984-8632 for any clarifications.
Cleaner Greener will be here May 4th. We are looking forward to having a team of volunteers to beautify the school. The city provides mulch, rakes and gloves. We just need the manpower. Please let me know if we can count on you that day. More hands make light work. The mayor will host a cookout after all the work is done as a thank you.

Family Newsletter Spring Edition
Nurse's Message - March 2024
I can not believe March is here. The days are longer, brighter and the first day of Spring is March 19th. March weather is fickle. We still may be cold in the morning, but warm up in the afternoon. If you are missing clothing items please check our lost and found.
As we head out of the cold and flu season I wanted to share some reminders. School sick rules remain in place. A child must be fever free and without medication or symptoms (vomiting, diarrhea) for 24 hours prior to the start of the school day. If your child will be absent from school please call the main office or my number and provide the reason for their absence.
4th grade physicals are past due. Please update the office on the status of your child pediatrician visit if you are not up to date. Vision and hearing failures have gone home a few times. If you have not seen a specialist yet please call my office to update me on when the appointment is scheduled. If you need a referral please let me know I have some local contacts. Good vision and hearing are instrumental in being able to access the school curriculum.
Thank you as always for communicating any illness, injury or concerns you may have for your child during the school day. If you need help or are in need of suggestions to help your child, please feel free to call the health office. My phone number is 617-984-8632 or email [email protected]
I greatly appreciate your help in keeping our kids healthy and learning.

Nurse's Message
With the holidays fast approaching, I wanted to reach out with a few reminders. November is a month when we have a few days at home to get those important appointments scheduled.
If your child is in 4th grade and you received notice about submitting a recent physical: Either call to schedule an appointment with your primary care physician or send in the one you have at home. Please call my office if we are waiting for an appointment date.
If you received notification that your child needs a vision appointment: Please call an eye doctor to have an exam. This can not be done by your primary care physician. If you need help with a referral please contact my office.
It is important for children who have eyeglasses to wear them while they are at school. Myopia (where far objects are blurry) is a progressive disorder. If left untreated, myopia can lead to an increased risk of cataracts, glaucoma and retinal detachment. Please follow the 20/20/20 minute rule. Every 20 minutes look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Please call me if your child needs support at school to wear their glasses.
Hearing screenings will occur throughout the year. You will only receive a letter if your child does not pass the screening.
During this time of Thanksgiving, I am most thankful to have the opportunity to care for your students and work with all the Beechwood Knoll families. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions or concerns.
I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving,
Mrs. Cerone, MSN, RN
